What is WebM?

WebM is an open source media file format designed for the web and launched by Mozilla, Opera, Google and other partners in May, 2010. WebM files consist of video streams compressed with the VP8 video codec and audio streams compressed with the Vorbis audio codec. The WebM file structure is based on the Matroska media container.

What is the WebM CCL?

At its core, the CCL is a patent licensing agreement. It is a collaboration of leading technology companies to cross-license their intellectual property, at no charge, to other CCL members. Each CCL member grants to other members a patent license for any of its patents that may be essential to the WebM technologies. In return, each member receives an identical license back from all other members.

What is the benefit of the CCL to its members?

Joining the CCL helps adoption of WebM and hence the web platform. CCL members realize that the entire web media ecosystem (users, developers, publishers, and device makers) benefits from a high-quality, open-source media format. Licensing patents is a tangible way for members to show their commitment to WebM.

Does the CCL change the rules for using WebM in any way?

Absolutely not. The purpose of the CCL is to provide additional assurance for those who use WebM.

Does the WebM Project require that I join the CCL to use WebM?

No. Xiph.org, Matroska and Google make the WebM technologies available under an open-source BSD license. The terms and conditions of that open-source license have not changed.

I want to use one of the WebM technologies but not the others. Does the CCL help me?

Yes. The CCL gives you a patent license to make, use and sell any of the WebM technologies separately from the others.

Can I join the CCL today?

We are in the process of forming the CCL. A summary of the key provisions is posted here, and you may also contact us with any questions.

Who's in charge of the CCL website and administration?

Founding members are working through details of how the CCL will be administered and will have more details to share soon.
